At Isabella's 2-Year Well Visit, Dr. Rubin noted that Isabella's sensitivity to certain textures had not improved. She recommended that I contact Help Me Grow for a full evaluation for a sensory disorder. I called right away and within a week was paired with a Summit County social worker.
She visited the house and did initial developmental screenings with Isabella. The screenings showed a delay in speech as well as a fine motor disorder. Tomorrow, Isabella's team of therapists (3 in all) will come to the house for the first visit. We will spend 45 minutes on speech therapy and 45 minutes on OT.
A lot of adopted kids go through speech and occupational therapy. We remind folks that for the entire time her mother was pregnant and for the first nine months of her life, she heard nothing but Spanish. A speech delay is expected. And as for the OT, sensory disorders are also very common in adopted kids because of the shock of changing homes. It's a coping mechanism that usually works itself out before kindergarten.
So wish us luck tomorrow as we begin our new adventure.

Sounds like you'll have some intereseting times ahead. I'm sure Isabella is smart and will learn easily. There were times with the girls I thought I was going crazy having to keep repeating words and repeat sayings like "Thank You", "Please", "Your Welcome", etc., but it pays off. Each child learns at their own pace... Mommy and Daddy have the hard jobs:) *Adoption side note... William was adopted and remembers hearing of moving around a lot and having to adjust. Even though he had changes, it's all in the heart and what people around you you make of your life.* You two and all the family around are strong people:)
Awwww....I am sure that this will be wonderful for her and that it will really help! You are right...so many children go through this and it's totally normal:-) It's great that they were on the ball on got things going quickly!

Please let us know how it goes. We'll be headed down the same road as you guys! Jakob's speech development seems to be improving, but he has a long way to go. Our first round of Speech Therapy back in February wasn't what we had hoped for, so we may, too contact Help Me Grow as we were referred to them as well. We've heard many good things about the program.
